先说目录
我找了两本英文书，先看封面：

可以看出，目录得用复数，也就是 contents。
Check the chapter headings on the contents page.
在目录页上查一下各章的标题。
再说内容
content 与 contents 都可以表示内容，但二者侧重点不同。content 抽象，而 contents 则较为具体。
It's not the style of the book I object to; it's the content.
我反对的不是那本书的风格，而是内容。
She hadn't read the letter and so was unware of its contents.
她没有看那封信，所以不知道信的内容。
除了书信的内容，还可以表示其他的内容：
Oranges have a high water content.
橘子的水分含量很高。
He drank the entire contents of the bottle.
他把瓶里的东西喝光了。
The police emptied her bag and examined the contents.
警察把她的包倒空，检查了里面的东西。
